About meramu

meramu is a card-combining language game made by Joshua Dirga. Combine illustrated cards to discover new objects and learn their names in your chosen language.

How do you play?

Choose two cards to make something new. Each level gives you a goal card to discover. Open a card to see its translation and hear its word when pronunciation is available.

What is included?

The browser demo has five levels in all 50 learning languages, with English translations. It starts over when you reload the page.

The iPhone and iPad app has 251 lessons and 384 illustrated cards. It saves progress on your device for each learning language. You can choose a native language for supporting translations.

meramu focuses on vocabulary. It does not teach a complete grammar or conversation course.

Which languages can I learn?

Choose a language to try five levels in your browser. All 50 are also available in the app.

Chinese cards include pinyin. Japanese cards show romaji by default, with a kana option in the app. The app downloads pronunciation clips for your learning language and can also use an available device voice. Browser pronunciation depends on your device and language.

Does the app work offline?

The app saves progress locally. Download the artwork and pronunciation for a lesson while online, then play that lesson offline. New lessons may need more downloads. No account is required, and there are no ads or in-app purchases. Players 13 and older can optionally sign in through Account in Settings to sync progress across devices.

The browser demo needs an internet connection to load. Browser voices may use an online speech service. Read the privacy policy for details.
